Steam & Japan Launch Day

STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT is no longer a wishlist rumor. MAGES. confirmed the Japanese multi-platform unlock on 20 August 2026, and Spike Chunsoft’s Steam storefront opened for a worldwide PC audience the same window (timers may read 19–20 August depending on timezone). The official launch trailer dropped with that announcement. This page is the dated news desk: what actually unlocked, what is still waiting, and which wiki pages to open before you spoil yourself in a Discord screenshot.

What unlocked on launch day

  • Steam (PC) — live worldwide. Early-purchase discounts that were advertised for the first two weeks may still be active; confirm the storefront timer rather than a screenshot from last week.
  • Japan: Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 unlocked on 20 August 2026. Japan’s Xbox Series X|S SKU is listed for 29 October 2026 at 16:00 JST.
  • West: Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series remain on 29 October 2026. See Release Schedule and Xbox Western Delay.

Physical boxes still concentrate on Switch-family and PS5 SKUs. PC and Xbox stay digital-only. If a friend says “it’s out,” ask which platform. Most arguments this week are incomplete quotes, not worldline collisions.

Reception in the first hours

Launch-week critic roundups clustered around a high-80s OpenCritic band, and Steam user reviews opened in Very Positive territory on a still-small sample. That is useful as a buying filter, not as a spoiler oracle. Common praise: redrawn huke art, re-recorded performances, ELITE-based pacing that reads cleaner, and a new Moeka-facing branch. Common caveats: the additional route is closer to another character ending than to a second campaign, a few UI quirks remain, and Steam Deck voice playback is unreliable at launch. For a full expectation ledger, open the updated Review. Handheld owners should read Steam Deck Notes before installing on Linux.

Watch the launch trailer, then close recommendations

The official Japanese launch trailer is embedded mid-page so you can see tone without autoplaying a recommendation rail of ending names. One video is enough. After it ends, come back here instead of letting YouTube decide your first ending.

What to do in week one

  1. Confirm your SKU on Platforms so you are not waiting for a box that never existed.
  2. If you have not started, read Getting Started and How to Play.
  3. Treat the phone as gameplay: Phone Trigger.
  4. If you already want route maps, use Endings Overview first, then the spoiler-gated True Ending Guide.
  5. Collectors still compare SKUs on Edition Comparison. Steam’s Octet of Shifting Space campaign is a bonus adventure with its own calendar — it is not a substitute for RE:BOOT itself.

Launch bugs worth knowing

Japanese day-one boards already mention a handful of progress snags (including a banana / microwave search sequence that can stall) and a Switch 2 TIP-list note that fails to stay on screen. These are player reports, not patch notes. Save before experiments, keep a second slot, and check official channels before assuming you are hard-locked. Controller mapping for the phone overlay is documented on Controls & Observer Log.

Spoiler etiquette across unlock gaps

Steam players and October console players do not share a timeline. Agree at dinner: no ending titles in group chat, no “just one mail reply” screenshots, no Gamma thumbnail raids. The Characters Hub is safe; the true-ending table is not. If you are the early observer, you are also the spoiler firewall.

Launch day is for reading, not for speedrunning a fake 100% sheet you found before the servers opened. El Psy Kongroo — verify your storefront, then open the phone UI.
